Planning a trip around music festivals in Cabo San Lucas is different from planning around a big city’s fixed summer circuit. Maybe you saw a beach concert on social media, or a friend mentioned a jazz weekend, and now you want to know what actually happens, when it happens and whether it is worth building a week around. This guide explains how the festival scene in Los Cabos works and profiles the one long-running festival with a well-documented record. It also sets out which months suit outdoor shows and shows how to confirm a date before you pay for flights.

How music festivals in Cabo San Lucas work

First, some geography. Cabo San Lucas, usually just called Cabo, is a resort city on the southern tip of the Baja California peninsula in the state of Baja California Sur. It sits next to the older town of San José del Cabo, and the two together are known as Los Cabos. A stretch of coastline lined with resorts, called the Los Cabos Corridor, links them. When a listing says an event is “in Cabo,” it may be in either town or somewhere along that corridor. That matters once you start pricing taxis and choosing where to stay.

The scene does not run on one big annual headline event. Music festivals in Cabo San Lucas and the wider municipality come in three broad forms:

  • Recurring cultural festivals. These are tied to a town and its community. The jazz festival in San José del Cabo is the clearest example.
  • One-off promoter events. These are ticketed weekends or single nights built around a genre or a lineup. Some return the next year and many do not.
  • Venue-led live music. Bars and clubs that host bands or DJs regularly. These are not festivals, but they are what most visitors actually hear.

The word “festival” therefore covers everything from a free two-night street event to a private ticketed show. Much of what you find online about music festivals in Cabo San Lucas describes past editions, so read every page with the year in mind. For the bigger picture of the region beyond music, our Baja California Sur destination hub covers the towns and how they fit together.

The San José del Cabo Jazz Festival

The jazz festival in San José del Cabo has the clearest public record of any event in this guide. It presents itself as the leading jazz festival in Baja California Sur. Its stated aim is to bring international visitors and the local community together in the center of San José del Cabo.

What the 2025 edition offered

The 2025 festival ran over two evenings, Friday May 23 and Saturday May 24, with music starting at 5:30 PM. Admission was free. Besides live jazz, the program included food, interactive workshops and art displays, so it worked as an evening out rather than a seated concert.

That year the festival also appointed its first artistic director, Hernan Hecht. He is a GRAMMY Award-winning musician, composer and producer with more than 300 productions to his name, and he contributed to the soundtrack of the film Amores Perros. An artistic director is the person who shapes the program: who plays, in what order and around which themes. The appointment suggests the organizers want a curated lineup, not a loose collection of bookings.

Who it suits

The festival suits travelers who like open-air evenings, families and anyone staying in San José del Cabo who wants to walk to the music. If you are based in Cabo San Lucas, plan a car each way. If you need a reserved seat or a backstage-style experience, a free street festival may feel crowded and informal. The 2025 late-May slot is a useful planning guide, but it is not a promise. Wait for the organizer to announce the current edition, then check our current events listings, where each entry shows who the organizer is.

Best months for music festivals in Cabo San Lucas

Weather shapes outdoor music festivals in Cabo San Lucas more than almost anything else. The city has a hot desert climate: very dry for most of the year, with almost all of its rain falling in late summer and early autumn. The table below uses long-term monthly averages to show what an evening outdoors is likely to feel like.

MonthAverage highAverage lowAverage rainWhat it means for outdoor shows
January80°F (26.6°C)55°F (12.8°C)0.24 inCoolest evenings; bring a layer for late sets

December81°F (27.4°C)57°F (14.0°C)0.29 inMild and dry heading into winter

A few points the averages do not show. Hurricanes can bring heavy rain for long stretches in late summer. Hurricane Odile made landfall at Cabo San Lucas in September 2014. If you plan an outdoor event between August and October, follow the organizer’s channels for weather updates. In summer, Cabo San Lucas usually runs 1.5 to 3°C cooler than San José del Cabo, which can matter on a hot festival night.

Other things are happening in the same months. Winter brings whales to the area, as pods arrive to calve in the warm waters of the Gulf of California. A music weekend in January or February can easily share the trip with a boat outing. October is the month of Bisbee’s Los Cabos Offshore, a major marlin fishing tournament that brings a sport-fishing crowd to the marina. It is not a music event, but it is worth knowing about when you book. Our guide to things to do in Los Cabos by town and season fills in the rest of the calendar.

Live music in Cabo San Lucas between festival dates

Most trips will not line up with one of the music festivals in Cabo San Lucas. That is fine, because live music is part of ordinary nightlife here. The most famous name is Cabo Wabo Cantina, a nightclub owned by rock singer Sammy Hagar. He founded it with other members of Van Halen and named it after their song “Cabo Wabo.” It is a natural first stop for rock fans. Treat it as a club with its own schedule, though, not as a stand-in for a festival with a fixed lineup.

Baja Brewing Company is another well-known name on the Cabo San Lucas nightlife scene. For a rainy evening or a break from the heat, Puerto Paraíso, the mall in the center of town, has a movie theater and a bowling alley, which makes it a reliable backup plan.

San José del Cabo has a quieter evening rhythm built around its historic center. Our guide to nightlife in San Jose del Cabo, from the plaza to live music walks through it. How to confirm a festival before you book

The most common way a trip built around music festivals in Cabo San Lucas goes wrong is booking around a date that was never confirmed for the current year. Event pages often stay online long after the event and get partly updated. Here is a simple routine.

  1. Find the organizer, not just the listing. Work out who runs the event: a festival team, a promoter or a venue. Their own website and social accounts are where dates are announced first.
  2. Check that the year on the page matches the body text. A headline can say one year while the details below still describe the previous edition.
  3. Look for specifics. A confirmed event names a date, a start time and a location. “Coming soon” or “stay tuned” means not yet confirmed.
  4. Cross-check with a local source. The Gringo Gazette, a biweekly English-language newspaper, covers visitor activities across Cabo San Lucas, San José del Cabo, Todos Santos, La Paz and the East Cape.
  5. Check current listings. Our events page lists third-party music, food and culture events with organizer details. Hyvibe is an independent guide and does not run these events, so ticket questions go to the organizer.
  6. Book flexibly until the date is firm. If you must book early, choose fares and rooms you can change.

A worked example

Say you want to catch the San José del Cabo jazz festival next spring. A page about the festival is titled with a newer year, but the text describes the May 23 and 24, 2025 edition. That does not tell you next year’s dates. It tells you the 2025 festival ran on a late-May Friday and Saturday, starting in the early evening. Use it as a planning window: hold a flexible booking for the last week of May and watch the festival’s own channels. Book once the organizer names the dates. If you stay in Cabo San Lucas, a May evening in San José with average lows around 62°F (16.5°C) means light layers, a booked ride back, and a calm day before the music.

Getting to and around on festival nights

Los Cabos International Airport serves both Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo and handles most visitor flights. A much smaller airport, Cabo San Lucas International, sits about 20 miles (32 km) south of it. It mainly handles regional flights within western Mexico, charters and some flights to the United States, and it operates from 6:00 AM to 8:00 PM local time. Los Cabos uses Mexico’s Pacific time zone (UTC−7), which helps when you read online start times or ticket release times.

On the ground, most visitors use taxis, which serve the towns, the corridor and the airport. Uber has been available in Los Cabos since 2021. Local buses cost only a few pesos and are used mostly by residents, but visitors can ride them too. For any of the music festivals in Cabo San Lucas or San José del Cabo that end after dark, arrange your return trip before you go out.

Common planning mistakes to avoid

  • Treating last year’s page as this year’s plan. Many festival pages describe editions that have already happened. Confirm the year before you commit money.
  • Assuming “Cabo” means Cabo San Lucas. An event billed as “in Cabo” may be in San José del Cabo or along the corridor. Check the exact location.
  • Ignoring late-summer weather. August and September bring most of the year’s rain and fall in hurricane season. Outdoor events then are more likely to change.
  • Expecting a festival every week. Music festivals in Cabo San Lucas are occasional rather than weekly. A trip with only one festival night is normal, and venue nights fill the rest.
  • Leaving the ride home to chance. A popular evening event can make cars harder to find. Arrange your return before the last set.
  • Buying from unclear sources. For ticketed shows, buy through the organizer or a seller the organizer names, and keep the confirmation.

Music festivals in Cabo San Lucas reward flexible planning. Start with the season, anchor the trip to a confirmed date if there is one, and fill the other nights with the region’s venues.
